Aloud Reading Vs Silent Reading

Reading is essential for learning. As we know there are mainly two types of Reading: Aloud Reading and Silent Reading.

Here we will discuss about what is the difference between Aloud Reading and Silent Reading is.

Aloud ReadingSilent Reading
MeaningAloud Reading means reading the content loudly at the top of his voice by the reader.Silent Reading means reading silently without any lip-movement.
PurposeThe main purpose of Aloud Reading to improve pronunciation.The main purpose of Silent Reading is to comprehend the content.
TypesAloud reading can be categorized on two bases. On the basis of Classroom Teaching it can be categorized as Model Reading & Simulated Reading and on the basis of number of Readers it can be categorized into Individual Reading & Group Reading.Silent Reading can be categorized into Extensive Reading & Intensive Reading. Intensive Reading can further be categorized into Scanning, Skimming, Critical Reading
Role of TeacherTeacher plays an important role in improving students’ pronunciation.Teacher only guides the students about what to read and what are the effective mechanisms of active reading. He plays a major role after reading in consolidating /summarizing the content or in evaluating the students’ understanding.
Class-Level/Age LevelThis type of reading is useful for students studying at Primary level of Education.This type of reading is useful for the students studying at Higher level of Education.
Body PostureCorrect Body Posture plays a major role in this type of reading like how to stand or how to hold a book.This type of reading is done in sitting and comfortable position, However, it is focused that backbone should be straight while sitting during silent reading.
Physical Effort of ReaderThe reader has do more Physical Efforts as more body organs are involved like lips, mouth, tongue, eyes & legs(due to standing position). Reader can feel more tired during this type of readingIn this type of reading less Physical Efforts are performed as less body organs; mainly eyes are involved in this type of reading and Reader feels less tired in comparison to Aloud Reading.
Mental Effort of ReaderThe reader performs less mental work during this type of reading.The reader performs more mental activities during this type of reading.
Time DurationMore time is required to read the given content for this type of reading.Less time is required to read the given/ specific for silent reading.
Length of ContentOnly small length of content can be read effectively by this type of reading.More content can be covered /read by this type of reading.
Abilities to be developedIt can enhance expression and communication ability of a reader.It can develop higher order thinking ability of reader.
Abilities to be developedIt can improve pronunciation of reader under the guidance or support of expert/teacher/language laboratory.It can develop concentration ability of reader.
